⚖️ THOMSON REUTERS vs. ROSS INTELLIGENCE : A LANDMARK CASE FOR IA AND COPYRIGHT

The Thomson Reuters vs. ROSS Intelligence lawsuit remains a key legal battle in AI and copyright law.

The case involves Thomson Reuters, owner of the legal research platform Westlaw, suing Ross Intelligence for  copyright infringement. Ross Intelligence used Westlaw's content to train its AI-powered legal research platform without permission. The court's decision marks the first time a U.S. court has addressed the application of the FairUse doctrine to AI training data.

A US federal judge ruled that ROSS Intelligence infringed Thomson Reuters copyright of 2,243 Westlaw headnotes by using them to train its AI-powered legal research platform. The court rejected ROSS’ argument that this constituted fair use under copyright law.

The ruling is a major precedent for companies, particularly those in the legal space, training their AI systems using copyrighted materials. It will be most relevant in cases where the AI product would compete directly with the copyright holder’s business.
